Evelyn Mae Black, 72, of Covington, passed away January 11, 2021 at Methodist Hospital North in Memphis. There was a walk through viewing for Mrs. Black Jan. 16 at Jefferson Mortuary, Inc., in Millington. Jefferson Mortuary, Inc. had charge.
JOHN L. CARLISLE
John L. Carlisle, 97, died January 12, 2021 at Tennessee State Veteran’s Home in Humboldt. He was born May 24, 1923 in the Big Creek community near Millington. In 1928 he and his family moved to the Lucy community. He was preceded in death by his parents, John V. and Pauline G. Carlisle; his wife, Mary C. Carlisle; and sisters, Frances Ferguson, Sue Phillips and Dorothy Vincent. He is survived by his brother, Jim Carlisle of New Mexico; sister, Jean Fitts of Bartlett; and many nieces and nephews. During WWII he served three years in the 86 Division of the U.S. Army, here and abroad, and was discharged in 1946 at the rank of S/Sgt. In 1947, he embarked on a 34 year career in law enforcement with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the State District Attorney. After 16 years at the Sheriff’s Department and holding the rank of Chief Deputy, he accepted a position with the State District Attorney. While employed by the District Attorney, in the position of Chief Criminal Investigator he closed out his career by retiring in 1981. It was a career that carried him throughout the country and a number of foreign countries. In the closing days of his career, he was asked to share the highlight of his career, to which he was quick to respond, “The day I graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1957.” A graveside service was held Jan. 15 at Big Creek Cemetery in Millington.

Annie Ruth Clark, 76, of Atoka, passed away on January 5, 2021 at Methodist North Hospital in Memphis. There was a walk-through viewing Jan. 16 with a memorial service at Historical First Baptist Church, in Millington. Internment followed at St. John Cemetery in Atoka. Jefferson Mortuary had charge.

Howard Irving Hickerson, 79, of Madison, Ala., died Sunday, January 3, 2021, at the Range Memory Care in Madison. Known as “Buddy” to his family and close friends, he was the son of Bill and Marie Hickerson, and a native of Tennessee. After graduating Millington Central High School in 1960, Howard joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He completed his education receiving his Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts and Engineering. He met his wife, Juliann DeKoning, while on a Coast Guard assignment in Massachusetts. Judy preceded him in death in October 2015. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Brother, Maurice, and Sister, JoAnn. His maternal grandparents were John and Maxie Lowe of Millington. He is survived by his Sister and Brother-in-Law, Vicky and Richard Scherberger of Madison, Alabama. Surviving also are his West Tennessee Cousins, Elizabeth Kinzer Smith, Sara Kinzer (David) Hayes and Rebecca Marie (Winston) Truett. Howard retired from the North Carolina Retirement System in July 1978. He was educator, both public school and college levels. Howard developed a North Carolina housing subdivision and built his own home.
