COVINGTON — Most games between Tipton County softball rivals are thrillers that can turn on one play. The March 16 contest between the Munford Lady Cougars and Covington Lady Chargers followed that traditional script on the field at Crestview Middle School. In the fifth inning of a scoreless game, Munford had two runners on base with two outs. Junior third baseman Peyton Joyner came up with a clutch hit down the left field line that appeared to score the first run of the game. But an alert throw from the Covington outfield to third base got the runner before Lady Cougar Tori Ray touched home plate. The Lady Chargers escaped that Munford rally. Covington finally scored behind the base running of Treasury Poindexter in the sixth inning leading to a 2-0 victory. “She just threw a lot of junk and kept up off balance,” Munford Head Coach Glenn Goulder said of the Covington pitcher. “We didn’t do a very good job with her. My hats off to them. “We didn’t bunch our hits very well,” he added. “We’ll get a hit here or a couple here. We didn’t bunch them very well. We took a pretty bad call at the plate. I’ll be honest with you. I thought that was a real turning point in the game. But that’s a part of the game too.” The game was going scoreless with Munford starter Sam Scott doing her part. The junior hurler struck out seven Lady Chargers over the first five innings. Scott and her defense neutralized Covington speedsters Poindexter and Neely Glenn during that stretch. Munford freshman second baseman Kelsey Frizzell made a couple of superb plays at her position to keep Covington off the scoreboard. But in the bottom of the sixth inning, Poindexter finally reached base with a bunt to leadoff. She then stole second base. A passed ball allowed Poindexter to take third. When Neely Glenn reached first base on a fielder’s choice, Poindexter darted to home plate to make the score 1-0. Glenn later scored in the inning to make the score 2-0 in favor of Covington. The Lady Cougars could only manage a double by Ray in the seventh inning before the Lady Chargers recorded the three outs needed for victory. Despite all their opening week games being cancelled, Munford Coach Glenn said his team had chances to win but didn’t take advantage of certain moments.
“They (Covington) were in the same situation we were,” he concluded. “You can’t make excuses. They beat us. They weren’t on the field anymore than us. I was real proud defensively. I thought we played a good defensive game. I thought our pitching was really, really good. We just didn’t hit the ball very well — not good enough to win.”
