Quick start fades for Lady Trojans vs. Haywood

By Thomas Sellers Jr. After Millington’s Koreena Bedford made a layup at the buzzer, the Lady Trojans were ahead 9-7 over the Haywood Lady Tomcats after one quarter of action. But the rest of Friday night’s contest in the William Osteen Gymnasium belonged to the visiting Lady Tomcats with Haywood outscoring Millington 54-35 to prevail 61-44 in District 15-2A play. The Lady Trojans matched Haywood shot for shot during the first 8 minutes with senior Kiara Kemp making the first field goal of the night giving Millington a 3-0 lead. The Lady Trojans went ahead 5-2 courtesy of a Micaiah Halliburton shot. After another Halliburton basket, Haywood finally tied the game at 7-7. In the closing moments of the first quarter, Bedford got loose on the break with the basketball. She released a floater just outside of the paint for the bucket and a 9-7 advantage. Kemp and teammate Jon’Tavia Bonner kept Millington close in the second quarter with baskets. Haywood managed to take a 23-19 lead into the locker room for halftime. In the third quarter, the Lady Tomcats outscored Millington 12-6 to finally grab a double digit lead. Haywood surged ahead 46-31 by the end of the period.

The Lady Tomcats won the fourth quarter 15-13 to earn the victory.
