The Millington School Board voted unanimously this week to offer a Summer Credit Recovery option this year for students in grades 9-12.

Board members took the action Monday night during their regular monthly meeting on a motion offered by Larry Jackson and seconded by Marlon Evans.

Tennessee Board of Education Policy 2.103(7) defines “credit recovery” as a “course-specific, standards-based” extended learning opportunity for students who have previously been unsuccessful in “mastering the standards” required to receive course credit or earn promotion.

By demonstrating mastery on state standards in the Credit Recovery Curriculum, current students can regain credit at no charge in a required course that they have previously failed with a grade of at least 50 percent.

Seven instructors/facilitators will be employed under the supervision of building administration and be paid $30 an hour.

The positions must be applied for through the school system’s Department of Human Resources.

The program will consist of instruction from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. each weekday from June 1-21 at Millington Central High School.

Breakfast and lunch will be served at no additional charge.

The instructors/facilitators must report for 2.5 hours on May 27 to allow for planning and be present from 7:15 to 11:45 a.m. each day of instruction.

The program will operate within the guidelines established in 2017 by the School Board in its Policy 4.210.

The policy states that the instructors/facilitators must comply with all Tennessee Board of Education certification requirements and be trained in course organization, online instruction management and related technology.

No students will be admitted to or otherwise enrolled in credit recovery courses without written consent of their parents or guardians.

Students must have previously taken an initial, non-credit recovery section of the proposed course and received a grade of at least 50 percent.

Those who have received a grade below that must re-take the course.

Students seeking to recover credit for the first semester of a two semester course will not receive the full credit for the course until they have:

(1) enrolled in and passed the second semester of the course; and

(2) taken any applicable End of Course examinations.

Instructors will work closely with facilitators to correlate class content and instruction.

All credit recovery courses will align with the state board’s current academic standards for the relevant course content area.

Instruction will be “differentiated” to address individual student growth needs based on diagnostic assessment or End of Course data.

Students in credit recovery programs must:

(1) complete a course diagnostic to determine “skill-specific” goals;

(2) meet individual skill specific goals in a flexible time frame as established by identified student need; and

(3) master all individualized skill specific goals as established by the diagnostic process in order to earn credit.

Grades awarded will adhere to the state board’s Uniform Grading Policy, and students who pass credit recovery will receive a grade of 70 percent.
