Brighton Softball Head Coach Robin Jacobs (left) and Munford Baseball Head Coach Scotty Yount both left Murfreesboro too early last week in their respective State Tournament appearances.

MURFREESBORO – Tipton County was represented in the Class 3A State Softball and Baseball tournaments with the Brighton Lady Cardinals and Munford Cougars respectively. Both teams traveled up to Murfreesboro last week for the 2017 Spring Fling. And missed opportunities lead to both squads returning back home earlier than expected. In the Class 3A State Baseball Tournament, Munford opened against Brentwood May 23. The Cougars nearly matched Brentwood hit for hit but left 12 runners on base leading to a 4-0 defeat. The Cougars had to go into survival mode May 24 taking on Dobyns Bennett in an elimination game. Munford got off to a good start leading 1-0 after a half inning. Then Dobyns Bennett scored three runs in the first to take the lead for good and eventually prevail 4-1. In softball action, the rainy Murfreesboro skies pushed the Lady Cardinals opener in the Class 3A State Softball Tournament back from the morning to night. Brighton vs. Brentwood final took place underneath the lights with Brentwood using a 5-run third inning to advance 5-0. The Lady Cardinals had to come back later that night to play a survival game against Henry County. The Lady Patriots were ahead 2-1 entering the fifth inning.

Then Henry County exploded for 5 runs in that frame leading to a 8-4 victory and the elimination of the Lady Cardinals.
