From January to March, just three short months, Shelby County Tennessee has seen over 8,000 crashes and one person dies every 36 hours here!

Why?

· speeding

· distracted driving

· driving while intoxicated

· aggressive driving/road rage

· racing

On the I-240 loop, there were six (6) fatalities in just the first quarter, and on Austin Peay/Highway 14 alone, there were five (5) deadly crashes! Other historically dangerous spots include the Hacks Cross and East Shelby Drive areas.

2019 showed 155 fatalities with over 39,000 crashes.  But 2020, with less crashes total (35,022) had increased fatalities of 250!  2021, upped the gruesome number to 256.  We are already on track to beat that this year.

It is unclear if any of these statistics include shootings that happened on I-240.  For a lot of reasons, you might want to avoid I-240 when possible.  In the meantime, because so many local accidents are caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers, make sure you carry at least $100,000 per person of uninsured motorist.

If you need it you’ll be glad you have it.
