Millington Head Coach Chris Michael will lead his Trojans into another season this coming August.

By Mark Healy

The 98th year of Millington Trojan Football dating back to 1926 will get underway on Aug. 18 and the Trojans varsity football schedule has been finalized with some familiar names, a new Region and a first ever meeting with a school with a lot of history.

The Black and Gold will be playing in Region 8-4A this season. Teams in this Region are Craigmont, Kirby, Melrose and Ridgeway. Millington will also play Munford, Fayette-Ware, St. Benedict, Brighton, Overton and Bolton. Here is the complete schedule and all games start at 7 p.m.

August 18

@ St. Benedict

Third ever meeting between the two schools. Last met in 2017 and 2018 with the Eagles winning both times.

August 25

Munford

All you have to say is the M&M Bowl. This will be the 41st consecutive year the two teams have faced each other. It’s the longest active consecutive series in the Shelby-Metro area. The Black and Gold lead the all-time series 53-28-2 but Munford has won the last 8 in a row.

September 1

@ Fayette-Ware

Trojans head to Somerville to take on the Wildcats. Millington leads the overall series 19-10-3 and has won 10 of the last 12 games between the two. The Wildcats are one of 3 teams on this year’s schedule that will have a new head coach.

September 8

Craigmont*

The Trojans and the Chiefs get back together for the first time since 2018 and it’s a region game this year. Millington leads the overall series 9-6 and Craigmont will have a brand new head coach as longtime coach Cecil Van Hooks has retired from coaching.

September 15

Kirby*

This will be the third straight year the Trojans and Cougars have met but the first time since the 80’s they were in the same league. Millington leads the overall series 13-9 and has won 12 of the last 14 matchups between the two.

September 22

@ Ridgeway*

Last time the Trojans and Roadrunners played each other was 2016 when they were in 5A together. Ridgeway leads the all-time series 5-2.

September 29

Overton

It has been 15 years since Millington and Overton have played as they used to region opponents for a number of years in the early 2000’s. This has been a series dominated by the Trojans as they are 13-1 vs. the Wolverines.

October 6

@ Bolton

The Trojans and the Wildcats have played 25 of the last 26 years with only the COVID year stopping them in 2020. Millington leads the overall series 29-8-1 and has won the last 5 in a row and 14 of the last 15.

October 20

Brighton (Senior Night)

Millington and Brighton will tee it up for the seventh time. The series is tied 3-3 and the two schools last played in 2020. Brighton has a new head football coach as well.

October 27

@ Melrose*

The Trojans wrap up the regular season with a trip to Orange Mound and a first ever meeting with the Golden Wildcats. Melrose has two state titles and six runner ups. They always have a number of great athletes that play at the next level and the NFL with current Dallas Cowboys standout Tony Pollard being one of them.
