On October 11, AAA – The Auto Club Group awarded the Millington Police Department with a traffic safety grant to assist the department in combating impaired driving throughout the community.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 28 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes every day.
Grant funds will be used to purchase four portable, hand-held breath alcohol testers that will be placed in patrol units. These devices will allow roadside testing of drivers suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol is the result of poor decision-making, and too often, it has tragic consequences,” said Chief Mark Dunbar, Millington Police Department. “If you drive while impaired, you could be arrested, or worse, involved in a crash that could take an innocent life.”
Since January 1, 2020, Shelby County agencies have worked over 90 fatal crashes involving drivers under the influence of alcohol.
Through this partnership, Millington Police Department and AAA hope to collaborate to drive these numbers to zero.
