Special to the Star

J.C. Floyd was born in Tishomingo, Miss., on September 8, 1919 recently celebrated his 102nd birthday.

His parents were Richard Perry and Carrie Durham Floyd.  He is the only surviving sibling out of 10 children. Floyd moved his family to Millington in the late 40’s to work at the Naval Base as an electrician.

He retired in 1982, almost 40 years ago. His wife, Vivian Loveless Hart Floyd, passed away in 2000. They produced five children leading to 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren and one great, great, great grandchild.

His family honored him this year with visits, cards, phone calls, text and Facebook messages. In years past and pre-pandemic, the family would gather in a venue to celebrate the life, legacy and longevity of “Papa.”

JC still has a great memory, remembering people he grew up with in Tishomingo, Paden,  Iuka. The people he worked with on the base and friends he has met over the years.

He has a great sense of humor and is always quick with a story or a joke. One of his favorite pastimes is cutting grass, which he did earlier this month. Floyd’s family is blessed to still have him around, to listen to his stories, and to call and ask him ‘how to fix something.’ Happy belated birthday Papa JC, we love you.
