Here’s a fun suggestion: Buy a National Day Calendar.
All 365 or, in the case of this year, all 366 days are filled with tributes to various items, anniversaries, foods and events you can imagine. One of the best months of observances is just underway. March is known for St. Patrick’s Day, March Madness, the beginning of spring and the ides.
On closer examination, March has some awesome national days of to celebrate. Just a few examples of days I will enjoy will be March 26’s National Spinach Day, March 20’s National Ravioli Day and March 19’s National Poultry Day.
I encourage you all to share in the observance of these next 10 dates I am about to list for this month. In between you keeping up with your bracket for the NCAA Tournament, wearing green and reading Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” make sure you mix in these great National Day observances.
National Corndog Day
March 16
Let’s begin with a great treat when you’re watching the aforementioned NCAA Tournament. Corndogs are a great instant meal while you’re indulging in various basketball games. National Corndog Day is observed each year on the first Saturday of the NCAA Tournament.
The cornmeal-based snack combines the greatness of the Native American diet and the German classic hotdog. Just pass me the mustard.
National Potato Chip Day
March 14
One of the most iconic snacks in U.S. America is the potato chip. It comes in many forms and flavors. And March 14 is a day dedicated to America’s No. 1 snack food.
Those thin slices of potatoes, fried and seasoned with many flavors, are a joy across the world now.
National Meatball Day
March 9
I love Italian food like pizza, the many pastas and chunky sauces. One of the foundational pieces of Italian cuisine is the meatball. Meatball’s dance partner of spaghetti gets all the attention and publicity. But I know who is the real star of this combination. National Meatball Day gives us a chance to grab a bite of Swedish meatballs, meatball sub, meatball pizza, turkey meatballs and even lamb meatballs. You can always enjoy a meatball.
National Cereal Day
March 7
Saturday is the perfect day to observe National Cereal Day. Most of us as children grabbed our blanket and a box of our favorite sweet grains to watch cartoons all morning. You can eat them dry or coated in milk.
Cereals have a long and wonderful history in our country. Since the 1800s we have eaten some form of cereals. Now it can be dinner or a quick midnight snack. No matter when you partake in a bowl, make sure you grab your favorite brand this Saturday.
International Waffle Day
March 25
Let’s stick to the breakfast theme with waffles. You need a quick way to get full while eating the first meal of the day? Load up some waffles. Grab your fruits, powdered sugar and rich thick syrup to enjoy some waffles. International Waffle Day was first celebrated in Sweden. Now we celebrate the tradition here in the States.
Waffles are special here, but they are a religion in Sweden. Sweden celebrates Vårfrudagen (“Our Lady’s Day”), a religious holiday nine months before Christmas. It sounds similar to the Swedish word for waffle (Våffeldagen).
National Pancake Day
March 12
IHOP does a great job of promoting this day, although the delicious breakfast icon doesn’t need much help to be loved. Pancakes are awesome in their various forms.
Blueberry pancakes are my favorite.
National Pancake Day is a spring tradition and, since its birth in 2006, IHOP restaurants have raised close to $24 million to support charities in the communities in which they operate.
National Oreo Cookies Day
March 6
Another brand worth celebrating in March is Oreo. Get the milk and cookies ’n’ cream ready for National Oreo Cookie Day.
This annual day is observed March 6 and gives us an excuse to buy all the new varieties of Oreos on your local grocery shifts.
And I almost forgot — pass me a piece of Oreo pie!
National Let’s Laugh Day
March 19
Life can be tough and even boring some days. We should seek happiness and laughter. March 19 is a day dedicated to us taking a moment to laugh. Across the world March 19 is National Let’s Laugh Day. Laughter is medicine for the soul and our physical health.
Make sure March 19 we all take a break from our hectic lives and relax with a laugh.
National Kick Butts Day
March 20
I’m not a fighter. So when I heard of National Kick Butts Day, I was anti-this observance. Then with further research, I learned it’s a day to quick smoking and give children awareness on the dangers of smoking.
I love this day and its purpose. Let’s kick the bad habit of smoking and make sure the younger generation avoids this habit that leads to health dangers. The day is organized by The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and it was first held in 1996.
National Napping Day
March 9
Monday is the ideal day for this beautiful day of observance. And it coincides with Daylight Saving Day because we lose that precious hour of sleep. So it is understandable we all need a few naps on that Monday to regain our strength, awareness and will to live.
Remember to spring forward this weekend and don’t bother me on Monday, because I will be the angry man in need of a nap.
