Naval Air Station Memphis (1942-1995) and now Naval Support Activity Mid-South (1995-present) located in Millington, has rightly earned the nickname “Sailor Town USA” because few American communities share such a deep and lasting connection to the United States Navy.
For nearly 85 years, generations of Sailors, recruits, civilian employees, and military families have passed through its gates, transforming the base from a mere installation to an essential element of the City of Millington’s overall identity.
The Navy’s continuous presence not only shaped Millington’s economy, culture, and sense of purpose, it created a strongly rooted community partnership between Service member and citizen which remains noticeably vibrant to this day.
The installation gained significant historical importance over the years as one of the Navy’s major training centers. Following bootcamp, countless young Americans launched their naval
careers here in Millington, honing their military skills, further assimilating into Navy life, and continuing the important process of embodying the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Basically, for many veterans, “Sailor Town USA” is the place where they took their first initial steps into military life, helping to make the City of Millington permanently woven into the fabric and personal history of the Fleet.
Current Missions and Flag-Level Commands Today, the installation is home to three “Flag Officer Level” commands that have the unique
distinction of serving every Sailor and Navy family throughout the Fleet, afloat and ashore. Command Mission and Fleet Impact

Navy Recruiting Command (NRC)
NRC’s mission is to find, inspire, and recruit the best and brightest young men and women—both officer and enlisted—to serve in the Navy and Navy Reserves. Every Sailor recruited worldwide is processed and assigned a shipping date from this headquarters.
MyNavy Career Center (MNCC)
MNCC provides 24/7, 365-day Human Resource (HR) assistance and “hire-to-retire” services to Active Duty, Reservist, retirees, and their families. MNCC offers accurate,
timely support for career, pay, and personnel issues, ensuring Sailors remain focused on mission readiness.
Navy Personnel Command (NPC)
Often referred to as the “Engine Room of the Fleet,” NPC’s mission is to man the Fleet by placing the right Sailor in the right job at the right time. NPC manages all career-long human resources, that include assignments, promotions, and records for all personnel to ensure operational readiness.
Despite the evolution of specific mission sets, NSA Mid-South remains a primary symbol of the Navy’s enduring presence in the Mid-South region. It is the only naval installation worldwide whose operations directly impact every single Sailor and Navy family during their service.
From personnel administration and professional training to career transitions and family advocacy, the installation’s mission is essential to the sustained readiness of the Fleet. NSA Mid-South stands as a testament to the fact that naval excellence and heritage can flourish far from the coastline, sustained by a proud tradition of patriotism and community partnership.
The Millington community provides an essential support structure for the Navy’s family-centric requirements. Local institutions, including educational, religious, and commercial entities, have a long-standing tradition of integrating Navy families into the regional culture. This enduring community resilience is vital during deployment cycles and homecomings, transforming a standard duty station into a dedicated Navy hometown – “Sailor Town USA”!
