Alan Cross

Former Millington Trojan standout and current University of Memphis senior tight end Alan Cross made the list of 55 players nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy.

The Trophy honors the most outstanding current/former Walk-On for sixth year. Cross, the winner of The Millington Star 2011 Athlete of the Year Award, is currently a team captain for the 8-2 Memphis Tigers.

Cross is a returning all-conference performer and Memphis Football’s all-time leader in receiving touchdowns by a tight end.

Back in 2011, Cross walked onto the Tigers as as long snapper after earning All-Star honors at Millington. A walk-on is defined as a player who began his first season of participation with a Division I (FBS) football program without financial aid of any kind from the university’s athletic department.

The Trophy is named in honor of former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman, Brandon Burlsworth. Burlsworth’s life is also the subject of a new motion picture, “GREATER,” which will be released on Jan. 22, 2016.

Cross has enjoyed a movie script type of career at Memphis catching 21 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns this season adding to his all-time records. For his career, Cross has caught 86 passes for 1,007 yards and is Memphis’ all-time leader in touchdown receptions by a tight end with 13 for his career.
