A long power outage can be an unexpected and challenging situation to face. Being prepared ahead of time can make a significant difference in how you and your loved ones cope with such an event. Here are some essential tips to help you prepare for a long power outage:

Stock Up on Supplies:

Create an emergency kit/closet that includes non-perishable food, drinking water, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and necessary medications. Ensure you have enough supplies to last for at least 72 hours.

Have a Backup Power Source:

Consider investing in a whole house generator, a portable generator and/or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to provide temporary power during the outage. Small portable recharging packs are cheap and can stay on chargers until needed and can recharge a phone multiple times.

Prepare Alternative Lighting:

Stock up on candles, lanterns, or battery-powered lights to provide illumination during the outage. Don’t forget matches or lighters.

Preserve Perishable Food:

Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to retain the cold temperature. If you have a generator, run a freezer first. Also having coolers with reusable ice packs may help essential perishable items in case the power outage lasts longer.

DIY cooling:

If hot, build a swamp cooler. Put ice in a cooler and cut two holes. Place a battery powered or generator run fan downward in a hole and a pvc elbow upward out the other.

Plan for Entertainment and Distractions:

Gather books, board games, puzzles, or other activities that do not require electricity. Engaging in such activities can help pass the time and keep everyone entertained during the outage.
