With several traditional celebrations of our Nation’s birthday already cancelled, the city of Millington is planning to keep the fireworks going in honor of the United States of America’s 244th.
On July 2 at the historic USA Stadium gates will open at 6 p.m., costing $5 a car load. City of Millington officials and employees like Alex Harris have modified the Flag City Freedom Celebration to creates a safer, patriotic environment for all those who will attend.
“There’s no live music,” Harris said. “We’ll have somebody playing music. There will be a karaoke DJ. We’ll have our regular VIP area for the event sponsors and city officials. Most things will be normal. We will have food trucks. They’re have rules they have to follow.
“We’re not doing any of the glow in the dark stuff,” she added. “We are limiting contact. We encourage you to bring exact change. But besides that, everything is the same.”
The 2020 Flag City Freedom Celebration will be absent of the Kids’ Play Zone. Gone are the bounce houses and designated children play area.
The Millington Parks and Recreation crew will keep the event grooving with music by Sherry Oke. The fireworks will start about 9:15 or complete sundown.
Harris reminded the public parking is $5 a vehicle and parking is also very limited. Bring picnic basket, blankets, coolers and lawn chairs. There will be food and beverage concessions under the new CDC guidelines.
“Everybody is welcomed to come,” she said. “They will still have fun. There is plenty of space and plenty of land to have social distancing.
“We think the city needs this,” Harris concluded. “So please come out and celebrate.”
