At Trezevant, a senior living community in the heart of Memphis at 177 North Highland, fitness is at the center of resident activities. With nearly 40 weekly fitness classes from which to choose, Trezevant residents have a plethora of options when it comes to selecting the ways in which they can stay active.

“Here at Trezevant, we offer a variety of wellness activities so that the needs and desires of every resident can be met,” says Rinnie Wood, Fitness Director at Trezevant. “There are many components of fitness including flexibility, endurance, balance and strength – all of which deteriorate with age. However, finding enjoyable movement that allows improvement in these areas is critical to independence.”

For this reason, Trezevant offers a variety of fitness activities to suit nearly any preference and ability level including water aerobics, yoga, tai chi, balance and strength training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, Rock Steady boxing and more. For residents who love the great outdoors, fitness can come in the form of a stroll around the walking trail throughout the beautiful 15-acre campus. Trezevant is also home to a therapeutic, heated pool and a state-of-the-art workout room. Personal training and solo workouts are available to residents as are off-campus adventures such as walking tours through the familiar sights and neighborhoods of Memphis.

In keeping with the senior living community’s focus on holistic health, the fitness offerings at Trezevant regularly incorporate meditation and breathwork alongside vigorous movement to elevate the wellness of a resident’s mind, body and spirit.

A recent New York Times article notes that exercise can stall muscle loss, cognitive decline and fatigue. In the same article, National Institute on Aging gerontologist Chhanda Dutta states a familiar refrain by saying, “It’s never too late to start exercising and it’s never too early.”

Trezevant’s fitness leader agrees.

“We want to meet residents where they are and let fitness be one of the ways that they enjoy their independence while improving longevity,” says Wood. “Our fitness activities can be stimulating, relaxing, strengthening, balancing or stretching, depending on the resident and the activity. The important thing is that we find movements that we all enjoy that can help us continue on the road to better health and continued wellness.”
