The Millington Board of Mayor and Aldermen has voted unanimously to purchase a new emergency outdoor warning siren from the sole local distributor.
Board members took the action during their Dec. 14 regular monthly meeting on a motion offered by Alderman Don Lowry and seconded by Alderman Al Bell.
A resolution to approve the purchase states that the Shelby County Emergency Management and Homeland Security Office, which is a part of the county government, has “standardized” on the “federal signal rotating sirens” for deployment within the county.
The office has also designated Comserv Services LLC as a “sole source” local provider of the sirens.
The company, doing business as Comserv Wireless, submitted a quotation on Dec. 8 totaling $15,989 to provide and install a new siren in the city.
The resolution states that the siren that has been on top of the old Millington Fire Station No. 2 has “ceased to function” and must be replaced to protect the city’s residents.
City Finance Director John Trusty said that siren is “so old” that replacement parts are no longer available for it. He noted that the new siren will be mounted on a pole behind the newly constructed Station No. 2.
