The Millington Lions Club Foundation received a donation from West Tennessee Eye of more than 500 new frames. These frames were then given to the Southern College of Optometry students in the SVOSH (Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) program; the students, along with medical eye doctors, take these glasses on mission trips to impoverished regions in Central and South America, such as Belize, Bolivia, Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, etc. In just a one-week period, they can perform more than 9,000 eye exams, distribute 6,000 pairs of prescription eyeglasses, and provide more than 1,500 pairs of sunglasses. These professionals also perform eye surgeries such as cataract surgery and retinal corrections and treat cases of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions. The SVOSH students must do their own fundraising throughout the year in order to participate in these trips so the Millington Lions Club Foundation donated $500 to a SVOSH student’s campaign this year. We offer a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Cooper and his team for these frames that helped us offer the gift of sight to many.
