The Supreme Court lost an important figure with the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week. She cast important votes on a number of issues. From her appointment by Bill Clinton in 1993 she successfully fought against gender discrimination.
It will be interesting to me to see how long it will take for a new appointment. Will it be right away, like this week, or will it be after the election. It will have to be done sooner or later.
With a Republican president and a Republican senate, I would think that a nomination would come soon. After a nomination we will undoubtedly see a lot of political bickering. Maybe it will be a distraction from the issues of the election and maybe it will just be fighting among the two major parties.
Ginsburg was not one to vote in favor of our sitting president, for whatever reason. It makes sense to me that once there is a qualified candidate that the process should move forward and not leave the Supreme Court a justice short for a long period.
I have to admit that I have not followed the Supreme Court and its makeup and when the 2016 election campaigns were under way there was some speculation that the next president could possibly be responsible for filling three seats. Ginsburg’s makes the second one.
My philosophy is that “everything happens for a reason” and what will be will be. My beliefs are that the justices should not serve for life, but have term limits.
What are your thoughts?
Many do not care about who is selected but the more I read, the more it seems to matter. I hope the right decision is made. If our legislators will pray hard about it then they might just get the answer they need rather than the answer that best suits one party or the other.
I will be one of those praying about this issue along with a host of others.
On another note, Southeastern Conference football starts Saturday. My Vols will be playing in South Carolina and that’s the first game that I hope to watch.
I have not watched the first NFL game and as I write this column Sunday night I can honestly say that I don’t know who won any games today or what teams will have played Monday night. All the drama in the NFL turned me off completely. I am one who normally watched all or parts of several NFL games each week. Last year I limited it to glimpses of the Titans and this year has been void of NFL on our TV.
That’s just my opinion and I’m sticking to it.
I do suggest we all read more (local) newspapers.
